While creating maps for Lakebound I'm always intrigued by unusual place names. Never more so than while working recently on Virginia's Northern Neck, which is a zoomed in portion of our Chesapeake Bay map. I was struck by the cordiality of Welcome, Maryland and just across the Potomac River, Welcome, Virginia. Even more beguiling to me are Another Place and Mutual Consent in Maryland; small unincorporated communities with such unusual names. Researching King and Queen Court House in Virginia reveals that the courthouse located there was built in 1750 and is still operating today 270 years later. Perhaps my favorite history is in Hustle, Virginia, which was so named by a pickle vendor whose customers would "hustle" in to buy his product according to this article in the Free Lance-Star.
